    High Speed Blanking: An Experimental Method to Measure Induced Cutting Forces

However, the inherent dynamics of such a process makes it difficult to develop a practical high speed punch press. The fracture phenomenon governing the blanking process has to be well understood to correctly design the machine support and the tooling. To observe this phenomenon at various controlled blanking speeds a specific experimental device has been developed. The goal is to measure accurately the shear blanking forces imposed on the specimen during blanking. In this paper a new method allowing the blanking forces to be measured and taking into account the proposed test configuration is explained. This technique has been used to determine the blanking forces experienced when forming C40 steel and quantifies the effect of process parameters such as punch die clearance, punch speed, and sheet metal thickness on the blanking force evolution

    Detection of Tree Crowns in Very High Spatial Resolution Images

    The requirements for advanced knowledge on forest resources have led researchers to develop efficient methods to provide detailed information about trees. Since 1999, orbital remote sensing has been providing very high resolution (VHR) image data. The new generation of satellite allows individual tree crowns to be visually identifiable. The increase in spatial resolution has also had a profound effect in image processing techniques and has motivated the development of new object-based procedures to extract information. Tree crown detection has become a major area of research in image analysis considering the complex nature of trees in an uncontrolled environment. This chapter is subdivided into two parts. Part I offers an overview of the state of the art in computer detection of individual tree crowns in VHR images. Part II presents a new hybrid approach developed by the authors that integrates geometrical-optical modeling (GOM), marked point processes (MPP), and template matching (TM) to individually detect tree crowns in VHR images. The method is presented for two different applications: isolated tree detection in an urban environment and automatic tree counting in orchards with an average performance rate of 82% for tree detection and above 90% for tree counting in orchards

    Efficient numerical computations of yield stress fluid flows using second-order cone programming

    International audienceThis work addresses the numerical computation of the two-dimensional flow of yield stress fluids (with Bingham and Herschel-Bulkley models) based on a variational approach and a finite element discretization. The main goal of this paper is to propose an alternative op-timization method to existing procedures such as penalization and augmented Lagrangian techniques. It is shown that the minimum principle for Bingham and Herschel-Bulkley yield stress fluid steady flows can, indeed, be formulated as a second-order cone programming (SOCP) problem, for which very efficient primal-dual interior point solvers are available. In particular, the formulation does not require any regularization of the visco-plastic model as is usually the case for existing techniques, avoiding therefore the difficult choice of the regularization parameter. Besides, it is also unnecessary to adopt a mixed stress-velocity approach or discretize explicitly auxiliary variables as frequently proposed in existing meth-ods. Finally, the performance of dedicated SOCP solvers, like the Mosek software package, enables to solve large-scale problems on a personal computer within seconds only. The pro-posed method will be validated on classical benchmark examples and used to simulate the flow generated around a plate during its withdrawal from a bath of yield stress fluid

    Learning Value Functions in Deep Policy Gradients using Residual Variance

    Policy gradient algorithms have proven to be successful in diverse decision making and control tasks. However, these methods suffer from high sample complexity and instability issues. In this paper, we address these challenges by providing a different approach for training the critic in the actor-critic framework. Our work builds on recent studies indicating that traditional actor-critic algorithms do not succeed in fitting the true value function, calling for the need to identify a better objective for the critic. In our method, the critic uses a new state-value (resp. state-action-value) function approximation that learns the value of the states (resp. state-action pairs) relative to their mean value rather than the absolute value as in conventional actor-critic. We prove the theoretical consistency of the new gradient estimator and observe dramatic empirical improvement across a variety of continuous control tasks and algorithms. Furthermore, we validate our method in tasks with sparse rewards, where we provide experimental evidence and theoretical insights.Comment: Accepted at ICLR 202

    Formalisme et mesure de la perception : Intérêt de la dynamique sensori-motrice chez un agent robotique

    Notre objectif est de proposer une définition de la perception et de montrer comment un agent autonome peut apprendre à construire sa propre perception de son environnement. Nous présentons cette formalisation dans un cas concret de robotique : un robot Koala muni d'une caméra a pour tâche de se diriger vers un objet précédemment appris. Des outils de visualisation d'une mesure de la perception sont mis en oeuvre. Ceux-ci sont basés sur l'exploitation des sensations et des actions de l'agent enregistrées au cours d'expériences. L'apprentissage sensori-moteur réalisé par l'agent permet à ce dernier de déformer sa perception : du point de vue comportemental, un invariant est créé. Enfin l'observation de l'évolution temporelle de la perception est révélatrice de l'importance des dynamiques des boucles sensori-motrices

    Does microbicide use in consumer products promote antimicrobial resistance? A critical review and recommendations for a cohesive approach to risk assessment

    The increasing use of microbicides in consumer products is raising concerns related to enhanced microbicide resistance in bacteria and potential cross resistance to antibiotics. The recently published documents on this topic from the European Commission have spawned much interest to better understand the true extent of the putative links for the benefit of the manufacturers, regulators, and consumers alike. This white paper is based on a 2-day workshop (SEAC-Unilever, Bedford, United Kingdom; June 2012) in the fields of microbicide usage and resistance. It identifies gaps in our knowledge and also makes specific recommendations for harmonization of key terms and refinement/standardization of methods for testing microbicide resistance to better assess the impact and possible links with cross resistance to antibiotics. It also calls for a better cohesion in research in this field. Such information is crucial to developing any risk assessment framework on microbicide use notably in consumer products. The article also identifies key research questions where there are inadequate data, which, if addressed, could promote improved knowledge and understanding to assess any related risks for consumer and environmental safety

    Single trace HQC shared key recovery with SASCA

    This paper presents practicable single trace attacks against the Hamming Quasi-Cyclic (HQC) Key Encapsulation Mechanism. These attacks are the first Soft Analytical Side-Channel Attacks (SASCA) against code-based cryptography. We mount SASCA based on Belief Propagation (BP) on several steps of HQC\u27s decapsulation process. Firstly, we target the Reed-Solomon (RS) decoder involved in the HQC publicly known code. We perform simulated attacks under Hamming weight leakage model, and reach excellent accuracies (superior to 0.90.9) up to a high noise level (σ=3\sigma = 3), thanks to a re-decoding strategy. In a real case attack scenario, on a STM32F407, this attack leads to a perfect success rate. Secondly, we conduct an analogous attack against the RS encoder used during the re-encryption step required by the Fujisaki-Okamoto-like transform. Both in simulation and practical instances, results are satisfactory and this attack represents a threat to the security of HQC. Finally, we analyze the strength of countermeasures based on masking and shuffling strategies. In line with previous SASCA literature targeting Kyber, we show that masking HQC is a limited countermeasure against BP attacks, as well as shuffling countermeasures adapted from Kyber. We evaluate the ``full shuffling\u27\u27 strategy which thwarts our attack by introducing sufficient combinatorial complexity. Eventually, we highlight the difficulty of protecting the current RS encoder with a shuffling strategy. A possible countermeasure would be to consider another encoding algorithm for the scheme to support a full shuffling. Since the encoding subroutine is only a small part of the implementation, it would come at a small cost

    International audienceFor the analysis of functional structure of communities, the ecologists are obliged to extend their investigations to the heterogeneity of their environment and colonized biotopes. The gills of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax serve as a biotope for several ectoparasites ; some aspects of the heterogeneity of this biotope were studied quantitatively. The models expressing the variations of number of branchial filaments, and branchial area that can be colonized by monogeneans, were established in function of the lenght of fishes. Such biotopes being subjected to significant physical modifications, the effects of the latter over the organization of parasitic settlements are then discussed
